Come and visit the 14th-century porch bell tower of St Pierre church this summer.
The 23-metre-high tower offers a breathtaking view of the Bay of L'aiguillon, La Rochelle and the Ile de Ré.
The first mention of the church dates back to 1223.
It was destroyed at the start of the Hundred Years' War, then rebuilt with its fortifications between 1360 and 1420.
The present porch bell tower dates from this period and was listed as a historic monument in 1907.
At the time, the church had three naves: a central one and two lateral ones, less high and less wide. The main entrance was on the south side of the bell tower.
After 1450, the steeple was topped by a spire that served as a landmark.
In 1568, the church was again devastated by the outbreak of the Wars of Religion, and only the central nave was rebuilt, between 1608 and 1610.
In 1635, the baptismal font was installed in the former doorway of the porch belfry.
In 1866, an aedicula protruding from the wall was built to make the baptismal font more accessible.
The sacristy was built in 1730. In 1873, it was enlarged using the thickness of the original church's chevet wall.
In 1849-1850, major renovation work was carried out on the nave, raising the floor and walls, which were in a state of high humidity; the flat wooden ceiling, high altar, pulpit and woodwork at the back of the choir date from this period.
The porch bell tower rises 23 m above the ground and 45 m above sea level, providing a magnificent view of the Anse de l'Aiguillon, La Rochelle and the Ile de Ré.
