Muséum d'histoire naturelle - 28 rue Albert 1er

Screening of the documentary d'Ambrym by Eric Vandendriessche and Camille Etul (49 min, CNRS, 2024) followed by a round-table discussion moderated by Elise Patole-Edoumba.
As part of the exhibition Vanuatu: pouvoirs des femmes and the Rendez-vous océaniens du Cinéma des Ailleurs de Rochefort, in partnership with the CNRS.
In the north of the island of Ambrym (Vanuatu), two graphic practices - referred to locally by the same vernacular term - are being studied by ethno-mathematician Éric Vandendriessche. These are drawings drawn in a continuous line with the finger on the clay of villages or the sand of beaches, and ephemeral figures made from a loop of vegetable string. In turn, experts in these procedural and geometric activities, traditional chiefs and Vanuatu teachers talk about these practices as they relate to the environment, mythology, rituals, magical practices and mathematics of this small corner of the world.
