Mois Kréyol Festival

From 25/10 to 18/11/2024, daily.
Mois Kréyol Festival
La Sirène - Mille Plateaux - Musée du Nouveau Monde
17000 - La Rochelle
A not-to-be-missed event for all Creole cultures, within and beyond their geographical borders.
In 2017, the Mois Kréyol Festival was launched with a small team.

Eight years later, and despite the storms, our commitment and determination are as strong as ever. Our desire to promote artists from across the Atlantic, and to bring together artists and cultural associations around a convivial, generous, inventive and protesting highlight is and will remain the foundation of this festival.

For this 8th edition, the festival pays tribute to Maryse Condé, renowned writer and patron of the festival, and puts the spotlight on Guadeloupe and the rhythms of Gwoka percussion.

Gwoka, a true African heritage with its drums, known as "Ka", today extends to the whole of Guadeloupean society and has become a common asset.

Dubbed by some as "the lungs of the Guadeloupean soul", it accompanies gatherings such as rituals for the deceased, political or social demonstrations and carnivals. Several thousand people practise it assiduously every week in schools and dance and music associations. Our drum dances are heard everywhere from the West Indies to Haiti, via the Indian Ocean. It's even found in Japan!

For the past 10 years, this year, its song, rhythm and dance have been inscribed on UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list.

It's in this spirit of celebration that we invite the public to discover a host of talented artists in a multi-disciplinary program. During our stopovers in France and the French West Indies/Guyana, they will discover dance, music and theater performances, meetings, conferences and film screenings. All these events embody this heritage and contribute to the protection of the intangible cultural heritage of Overseas France and Africa, while also involving the Indian Ocean: Mayotte, Reunion, Mauritius and Haiti.
