Exhibition - L'univers maritime de Gilbert Maurel
Musée Maritime de La Rochelle - Place Bernard Moitessier
17000 - La Rochelle
A talented illustrator and artist in his own right, Gilbert Maurel has had at least seven lives, just like his cat. A brilliant jack-of-all-trades, he toured the world before settling in La Rochelle.
Called by the world of work at sea, he set off on new adventures in perilous environments, hundreds of kilometers from land, from the North Sea to the Indian Ocean, on oil platforms, where he worked on logistics and illustrated communications for technicians of different levels and nationalities. Then, one day, he settled in La Rochelle and took part in a wild adventure in heritage and museums, with the creation of the Maritime Museum in 1988.

His drawings have all the precision of a naval architect's line, and when he pushes his sketch further, he truly embodies a boat, ready to be launched and experience its first adventure on the raging waves. Gilbert Maurel's maritime universe is a rich and varied illustrated account of the maritime world in all its component parts, and of the world of seafarers. It's also a journey back in time, both poetic and technical, inspired by a literature that smells of iodine and salt.
