Conference - Les extraordinaires tribulations aux Indes des Daniell's au XVIIIe siècle en images et leur legs artistique

In the second half of the 18th century, many amateur and professional artists visited India and recorded its life, architecture, costumes and landscapes. At the time, Europeans had no images of India other than those based on direct observation by visiting artists.
Among the great artists who worked in the Indian subcontinent in the 18th and 19th centuries, the Daniell's, Thomas and his nephew William are probably the most remarkable.
They played an eminent role in documenting the country's landscapes, buildings and people. Their seven-year tour of India from 1786 to 1793 and their subsequent publications provided the British public with an unparalleled view of the life and architecture of the beautiful country that was to become their great Indian empire, the jewel in the crown of the British Empire.
They sketched over 140 remarkable sites, which they transformed into engravings and paintings back in England.
One of these paintings was chosen by Loïc Palluaud, the painter from La Rochelle who created the large fresco adorning the stairwell of the Résidence des Indes. The painter will be on hand to explain the design and execution, and answer any questions you may have.
