New World Museum

La Rochelle was one of the main ports of trade and emigration to the New World: New France, West Indies, etc.
Thus, since the beginning of the 16th century, thousands of Frenchmen have taken the medieval towers of La Rochelle with them as their last image of France and as their hope for America.
As a witness to these relations between France and the Americas, the Museum of the New World presents its thematic collection in the prestigious setting of a former 18th century mansion, the Hôtel Fleuriau, the home of a wealthy family from La Rochelle who owned a plantation in Santo Domingo (Haiti).
Through paintings, engravings, drawings, sculptures, old maps and decorative art objects related to the theme of the New World, the museum transports you from the West Indies to New France and the conquest of the West, and brings you to meet the Amerindian world through objects and photographs by Edward Curtis.

Throughout the school year, participants will discover various themes and artistic techniques, from portraits to contemporary art, from linocuts to photography. During the sessions, based on plastic experimentation and multi-cultural discovery, the children will produce original creations which will be the subject of a small exhibition at the end of each term.
